Assalamualaikum wr.wb.

The honorable judges, the respectable master of ceremony, and to all my beloved audiences, Good Morning

I’d like to thank God, because  of his blessing, we can join the English speech contest here. Many thanks go to the committee of this speech contests who invite us to take a part in this great competition. And finally, my thanks go to my English teacher and my friends who support me to join this contest.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce myself. My name is NADIA MUNA SALMA. I am a student in grade VII.

Well… The title of my speech is THE HONESTY FOR A BETTER INDONESIA.

I have divided my speech into three parts. The first is Why many Indonesians are dishonest? The second is how to build honest citizens? The third is why honesty is very important for a better Indonesia?

I’d like to start by showing you some pictures.....). What pictures are they? Yes, you are right. These are pictures of Indonesian students cheating  when doing their test. Do you ever see students cheating when doing the test? I am sure you ever see them, even you often see them,… even in our own school, in our classroom, or maybe we ourselves ever did it or often do it. Why this happen?  Because many Indonesian students do not have honesty? There are only few students having honesty. Even,  students who do something honestly are blamed and hated by their friends.

We may remember the incident happened last year. Siami family must leave their house because Mrs. Siami reported that there were dishonesty in the national Exam in her son’s school. She said that the teacher asked her son, named Alifah Ahmad Maulana to give answers to his friends when doing the test. This family wanted to tell the truth but ironically people in their village were very angry. They asked them to leave their house.

It shows us that many people have lost their honesty. They want to get the best result using any ways, even using bad ways.

Ladies and gentlemen…

So why many students do not have honesty? I have a good book. Here it is. From this book I know why children like telling a lie.

First, many students, when they were still little children often saw their parents lie.  So they followed their parents. If parents, especially mothers often lie to their children so their children will lie too. There are many examples, some of them are:

·         A mother often avoids to meet a guest or refuses to answer the phone by saying “please tell to the guest or someone on the phone that I am not at home” while she does not go anywhere.

·         A mother tells her son/daughter that she wants to go to the doctor when going to the mall. If she tells the truth her children will follow her or cry.

So parents, especially mother must be careful. They must not lie to their children. If they lie and their children know they will copy what their parents do.

Ladies and gentlemen, what parents do usually become examples for their children. So parents must give good examples to their children.

Second, children like to copy others.

Children are good at copying others’ activities. They like copying their parents, sisters, brothers, teachers and friends. They copy good and bad activities. So parents and people around them must be good models for them. But if people around them give them bad examples they will copy them fast. If people around them like yelling, they will be good at yelling and if they like telling a lie, they will tell a lie too.

Third, the influences from their friends.

Many children are not honest because they have bad friends. They lie because their friends like to tell a lie.

Now I’d like to tell how to build honest citizens?

To be honest citizens people must start from their own family. Honest citizens starts from  honest families. If every families educate their children to have honesty in their heart so this country, Indonesia will be a better country. Because its people are honest.  There are no cheating in the exams, no corruptions,  no bribery or other bad activities. To build honest citizens, parents must not like telling lies, parents should implement honesty since their children are still a baby. Then, parents should become good models for their children. Finally, parents should control their children’s friends. Parents must know with whom their children play.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Honesty is very important to make Indonesia better. There is an opinion that honesty become the first aspect to get success. So to create a better Indonesia, citizens should have honesty. By having honesty in their heart, it is impossible for the children to cheat when doing the test. If these children always honest in every aspects of their life they do not have intention to be corruptor, to bribe someone, etc.

Now, Let me conclude my speech. Indonesia will be a better country when its people implement honest in every aspect of their life. And it is started by family education since they were a baby.
